Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour’s fundraising lags behind other Republican presidential aspirants, but he’s putting his money where his mouth is if he’s serious about a 2012 run.
Barbour’s federal PAC gave $5,000 apiece to state GOP organizations in Iowa and New Hampshire, the critical first and second presidential voting states, respectively. Those donations were disclosed in campaign finance reports filed Thursday. Barbour, who just finished a term as chairman of the Republican Governors Association, also gave to 11 other state GOP committees, but those donations were all for $2,500 or less.
Barbour spent $174,248 and raised $108,152 between Oct. 14 and Nov. 22, leaving his Haley’s PAC with $389,518 still in the bank. Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin raised nearly $500,000 in that period, while Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty raised $140,000. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney’s federal PAC reported $394,557 in contributions.
Notably, the congressional candidates to whom Barbour donated in the campaign’s waning days were all in early primary states that will be key in 2012. Barbour gave $1,000 each to Reps.-elect Allen West in Florida, Frank Guinta in New Hampshire, Joe Heck in Nevada, Mick Mulvaney in South Carolina. Barbour cut $1,000 to Iowa Republican Brad Zaun, who lost his bid against Democratic Rep. Leonard Boswell. He also gave $1,000 to Virginia Rep.-elect Robert Hurt, who defeated Democratic freshman Tom Perriello.
The former RGA chairman also gave to eight candidates for governor. Barbour spent the final weeks of the 2010 cycle crisscrossing the country at events for dozens of GOP incumbent governors and hopefuls.
