Sarah Palin is making an 11th-hour endorsement for Tom Tancredo’s bid to become governor of Colorado, backing the former congressman who is running under the American Constitution Party banner over GOP nominee Dan Maes.
Since winning the primary in August over frontrunner Scott McInnis, Maes has floundered, and support for his candidacy all but evaporated, giving Tancredo a prime opening. While Democratic nominee John Hickenlooper has consistently led the three-way contest, Tancredo has leapfrogged Maes and winnowed the gap with the Denver mayor. In a Public Policy Polling survey conducted over the weekend, Tancredo climbed within 6 points of Hickenlooper, 43 percent to 49 percent, with Maes pulling in just 8 percent.
Tancredo’s campaign announced via Twitter Monday evening that the former Alaska governor had endorsed his candidacy and recorded a robocall on his behalf.
“I’m calling to ask that you and your neighbors vote for Tom Tancredo to be the next governor of Colorado on Tuesday,” the former GOP vice presidential nominee says. “Tom is the right man for the job, and he’ll fight for lower taxes and he’ll stop growing government and start growing the economy. And we know he’ll continue working to end illegal immigration.”
Tancredo, who ran unsuccessfully for president in 2008, has also been endorsed by Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, and Colorado Reps. Doug Lamborn and Mike Coffman.
